"A Vase of Roses", executed with the style, richness and sensitivity associated with the work of Julian Alden Weir, is the only pastel still life by Weir that has come to light. By eliminating foreground and background details, Weir focuses in on the translucent vase of roses, intensifying their monumentality and intimacy. The even application of pastel makes this one of his most ambitious achievements in that medium, demonstrating Weir's ability to surround three-dimensional objects with light and atmosphere.
