"WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY AT MADISON SQUARE" 25 X 30 CANVAS WAS PAINTED BY ME IN FEBRAURY 1927. THE STUDIES WERE MADE FROM 23RD AND 24TH STREETS ON 5TH AVENUE LOOKING NORTH. THE LARGE FLAGG AND POLE REPRESENT THE SOLE EFFORT OF THE GREAT METROPOLIS IN COMMEMORATING THE PART PLAYED BY ITS CITIZENS, IN THE GREAT WAR UP TO DATE MAY 31, 1927. GUY WIGGINS 226 W 59TH ST." is written in the artist's own handwriting on the reverse side of the black and white photo of this painting.
