Kalmia depicts the mountain laurel bushes that bloom each June along the banks of the Lieutenant River behind the Griswold House. The style of the painting fuses the flickery brushstrokes of the Impressionist movement --as seen in the bushes in the foreground-with the flat muted style of tonalist painting in the background.
