Not a native species. Tree is on the Blithewold estate in Rhode Island. This is what their website says about it: Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula" Weekping European Beech Branches of beech trees grow low to shade the delicate bark. Look up under this tree to experience its full beauty. This tree was planted around 1900. Per Tom, Beech trees can root their branches in the ground and grow back out again. The branches we see in the photo are reminiscent of roots in the way that they seem to cascade downward.
