Per Tom, this particular elm was istrumental in him becoming an activist for these disease-prone trees. It was the first elm injected to protect it against Dutch Elm Diseases fungus and the first tree to be preserved by Elm Watch, which Tom founded. The tree stands on Baldwin Hill in Egremont, Mass. Importance/preservation of the tree led to the preservation of the land. Library of Congress owns this image, which is one of four showing the same tree in different seasons. This summer view is the first in the series. Mentioned usining a wide-angle lens for this image--makes it look like he's farther from the tree than he is, imparting a sense of grand scale to the landscpae and this quintessential American tree.
