The rectangular framework surrounding the two orbs in Suspended recalls the
compositions favored by Sillman in his color block paintings such as Water Gate, on
view in the first gallery. His ability to create color illusions that can convince the
viewer that two different colors are actually the same (and the reverse, tricking the
eye and mind into seeing a single color when in reality two are present) turns this
painting into a puzzle. How many yellows and how many greens are actually at play
here?
