One might easily imagine the work from the “Trials and Errors” portfolio to be a
collection of unfinished and unsuccessful works. On the contrary, the paintings in
this group seem to arise from the open?ended question “what if?” While some of the
motifs explored in the portfolio reappear elsewhere, others are unique. In the case
of In Cold Pursuit, the composition is nearly identical on the left and right sides, with
only a slight shift in value. The title, playful and provocative as many of his titles are,
causes the viewer to wonder just how cold and hot pursuits differ.
