Completed in just three days, As They Grow displays great regularity both with the distribution of the fl®®che forms across the paper and in the stepped gradation of the bands. Rather than reading as faded color, the lighter bands seem to glow, an illusion Sillman enhances by adding subtle color to them. He explores a similar technique in the large work entitled Variations Upon a Ground: Lights and Fires.
