Sillman’s method of gradually building up layers of watercolor required repeated
application to obtain the rich black of Black Caprice, which contains perhaps his only
completely solid fl®®che forms. Not surprisingly, the effect took over a month to
achieve. In certain areas the black masses completely or nearly encircle areas of
unpainted paper, causing the background and figure to momentarily change places
in the viewer’s mind.
