Completed only months before Sillman’s death from cancer, Swarm is the latest
work on view. In it, he moves swiftly from one of the deepest blacks that can be
obtained by watercolor, essentially a medium of transparent washes, to a nearly
invisible wash in the lightest band. As he layers one set of fl®®ches over another,
sharp black points slice across his skillful gradations.
