Henry Ward Ranger, founder of the Lyme Art Colony, first came to Old Lyme in the summer of 1899. "Autumn Woodlands" reveals Ranger's fascination with stands of ancient trees and his interest in a limited color palette and rough textural effects. Ranger's interest in a tonal style dramatically affected the work created by other early members of the Colony.
