The gauge is a wooden rod with a square wooden collar. the rod rod has a metal point on one side. the wooden collar can slide up and down the rod and can be held in one position by a brass thumb screw. Both the collar and rod have brass insets. The gauge was used to mark pieces of wood for bevel cuts along the corners. It bears the initials "VDC," "CEP," and "E.H. Potter."
