Ranger worked in watercolor during the 1880s when the American Watercolor Movement was flourishing. This work draws upon Ranger's experience in Holland where he worked closely with a number of other Dutch watercolor and oil painters. Ranger shared this knowledge with American audiences through the publication of several articles on Dutch watercolor technique in "Art Amateur" magazine during the 1880s.
