A long blue silk scarf with lacelike design embroidered at each end in red, green, off-white and yellow. The scarf has fringe on 3 sides. It belonged to the donor's grandmother who was from Austria. It is typical of the type of oriental scarves brought back to America during the China Trade.

Shawls in great variety appear to have reached the American market in large quantities in the mid-1800s. They were advertised for sale in newspapers from Boston to San Francisco.
