Born Elsie Miller, ede-else was an active member of the art community in Greenwich Village, where she ran a teahouse with her husband, the artist Frederick Buchholz. According to one observer, she changed her name (adopting the manner of the poet e.e. cummings) to conceal her gender in an art world that insisted on labeling women artists. She and Buchholz moved to Old Lyme in 1949, settling on Grassy Hill Road. In addition to exhibiting at national venues, ede-else was elected a member of the Lyme Art Association in 1957 and she exhibited there annually until her death.

In "A Basket of Apples," ede-else presents her still life subject from above, allowing it to fill the frame. Despite the painting’s small size, the vigorous brushwork and vibrant palette of reds, blues, and greens create a significant impact.
