Connecticut-born Elizabeth Enders grew up in New London and retains a longstanding affinity for the sea. The artist’s long sojourns on the coasts of Maine and Nova Scotia have inspired paintings like the two shown here—nearly abstract swathes of color that allude to the ocean’s panoramic format, mesmerizing waves, and azure depths. Unlike an earlier generation of women artists like Fidelia Bridges who specialized in rendering nature’s intimate details at close range, Enders eliminates specifics to arrive at a more universal conception of the landscape. Her paintings are nonetheless quite personal and meditative—each voicing one woman’s thoughtful response to nature.
