An exceptional early Davis, probably done in France where the artist lived (in Fleury near Barbizon). A very modest composition with a marshy stream receding diagonally across the picture plain. Using blended hues of magenta, blue and green to render the natural effects of twilight, the artist succeeds in conveying a sense of quiet and calm in which the only movement is a flock of birds in flight.
