"Fort Dumpling" is an important document of a long lost Newport landmark and national treasure. A post civil war sentiment is reflected by the artist along with his reverence for nature and homage to the work of Thomas Cole (ruined tower series) and Claude Lorraine ("picturesque" composition).
A really significant painting when one puts it in the context of collecting and ideology of landscape.
