Poore exhibited this portrait of Judge Joseph S. Huntington’s famous bull terrier, named Dennis Casey, in the annual summer exhibition of Lyme artists’ work in 1906. Judge Huntington oversaw the probate court in Old Lyme, where he was a neighbor of Florence Griswold. As in the Beagle Hound nearby, Poore has imbued the dog with human qualities, painting him as distinguished and proud as he would have depicted the dog’s honorable owner. While the dog’s name imparts a sense of character, “Dennis Casey” may also refer to a stereotype of Irishness that appeared in periodicals of the time.
