Bertha Dougherty summered in Lyme, where she came to love the local landscape. Here, she depicts the gentle contours of the Lieutenant River looking toward Florence Griswold’s property. After graduating from Vassar College in 1906, Dougherty trained at the Fawcett Art School and at the New York School of Design for Women. Although active as an engraver throughout her married life, she turned to art as a career after the death of her husband. An alumnae questionnaire Dougherty completed for Vassar in 1965 provides an apt sense of the many hats she wore as a woman and an artist: “Home-maker, Professional artist, Writer, Art Teacher.”
