Portrait of Phebe Griffin Lord

ca. 1820
19th Century
3 5/8 in. x 3 in.

Phoebe Griffin Noyes, American , (1797–1875)

Object Type: Work on Paper
Medium and Support: watercolor and gouache on paper
Credit Line: Florence Griswold Museum; Gift of Jane & Townsend Ludington
Accession Number: 2012.11
This sensitively done watercolor donated by Townsend and Jane Ludington was found in a collection of family papers. It is the only extant work we know of by Phoebe Griffin Noyes—who studied miniature painting with Madame Vaillent for 20 years. The subject is her mother Phebe Griffin Lord (1768–1841) who lived at the Lord farm next to what is now the Old Lyme Library. She was an important member of the community as head of the female reading society. This work will join other miniature portraits in the collection by Mary Way.
