Ivan Olinsky was born in Russia in 1878, and he and his family emigrated to this country when he was a child. They settled in New York City where Olinsky began art study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. At both schools he eventuallyy won teaching positions.

Olinsky was an accomplished artist who concentrated on painting the female figure, and was mugh sought after as a portraitist of prominent society members.
