Margaret Hardon Wright took advantage of the educational opportunities newly available to women at the end of the nineteenth century with the founding of women’s colleges and the professionalization of art education. In 1892, she graduated from Wellesley College, where she began her study of art. She took the then-unusual step of entering an architecture course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a period of training in Paris, where she lived with other female art students. Wright developed an interest in printmaking while in France and ultimately chose etching as her medium. Following her marriage to an architect in 1901, she traveled repeatedly to Europe. This etching of a street in Rouen dates from one such trip and conveys her ongoing love of architecture.
