Tabernacle-like box, painted dark red, inside which wooden hands hang with a wooden ball between them. The rest of the box is filled with a mosaic of "anchor blocks," an educational toy made in Germany since 1880 out of quartz sand, chalk, color pigments, and linseed oil. The artist collected old objects and brought them together into assemblages like this one.
Anchor Blocks were developed from German educator Friedrich Froebel's "gifts," a series of wooden building blocks. Brothers Otto and Gustav Lilienthal developed a way to make the blocks more precisely for a more weight, stable, yet natural feeling toy.
