In 1901 Dessar purchased a 600 acre estate on Becket Hill in Lyme. The rural landscape of the region was particularly suited to his interest in painting landscapes in the Barbizon style. To provide ready subjects for his paintings, Dessar stocked his farm with sheep and oxen.
