9 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.

Norman Ives, American, (1923–1978)

Object Type: Work on Paper
Medium and Support: foil-stamped print on Melinex
Credit Line: Florence Griswold Museum; Gift of Charles T. Clark
Accession Number: 2021.1
Printed in England by Harlands of Hull, Ltd., this design was commissioned by the Plastics Division of the British company ICI to show the potentialities of stamping foils in graphic design. Melinex is a type of polyester film similar to mylar and has here been given a foil treatment. Ives was one of several international designers commissioned for the promotional project.

At times, Ives worked with metallic papers in his collages. Here, the foil is part of the print, adding an interplay of positive/negative space and light/dark to the interlocked forms that intrigued the artist. We can relate this print to works on paper and paintings by Ives in the collection, as well as to prints by Anni Albers in metallic ink. The experimental spirit embodied in Ives’s participation in the project also aligns with the boundary-pushing of his Ives-Sillman printing firm. This is a rare piece by Ives, not previously known to the authors of the definitive work about him.
