1867
19th Century
18 1/2 in. x 38 in.

James Renwick Brevoort, American, (1832–1918)

Medium and Support: oil on canvas
Credit Line: Florence Griswold Museum, Gift of The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company
Accession Number: 2002.1.11
Brevoort began summering in the Housatonic Valley. In 1865 he chose Farmington instead and went to the colonial village with two artist friends. In August, they exhibited their work on the porch of a home on Maine Street. Altogether he painted and drew more than 50 images of Farmington. This view is typical of the late Hudson River School, less wild and more restricted in breadth and depth than earlier examples.
