In America, metalpoint drawings were first produced in the mid-1890s. The medium is very challenging and only a few artists have attempted to create in it. The most popular form, silverpoint, is produced by inserting a shapened silver wire into a holder or similar tool. The artist then draws with it on a coated paper. When the point passes over the paper, a small amount of the metal is deposited and the image cannot be erased. Metcalf chose the subject of his daughter, Rosalind for this work.
