In the earlier prints that utilized line constructions or structural constellations (the Multilex, Transformations, Solo and Duo, and Interlinear series and the Embossed Linear Constructions, the linear image was formed on the un-inked paper--either by the negative space that resulted from the impression made by an inked plate or woodblock, or by a raised area of a completely inkless sheet of paper. In the White Embossings on Gray, the challenge was to produce a white inked image over a colored background. The paper was a crucial element, since to preserve the precision of the machine embossing that had been attained in the Engraved Linear Constructions, while adding color, required a fine surface texture that would accept the embossing and assure crisp lines, yet have sufficient absorbency to produce a uniform, unmodulated ink surface. Roleaf, the paper that was used, was developed at Gemini G.E.L. specifically for this purpose.
