Matilda Browne was the only woman asked to paint a door panel in the interior of the Griswold House, and was one of the few women considered a serious artist by her male colleagues. This painting is one of her most significant works, and a welcome addition to the collection. The painting is as much about animals as it is an expression of the artist's interest in the atmospheric effects of moonlight. The location depicted in the painting , known as Cornfield Point, is on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook, across the Connecticut River from Old Lyme.
