Katharine Ludington was a talented and devoted citizen of Old Lyme. An artist, social worker, suffragette, and college trustee--although she never attended college herself--Ludington was a fierce New Deal democrat who supported good causes on the local, state and national level. An accomplished painter, Ludington tended to capture the likenesses of friends and family. Here, she paints a view in pastels of her sister Mary Louise Ludington (1862–1919), known to family as "Aunt May." After 1914, Katharine Ludington gave up portraiture in pursuit of the causes of international peace and women's suffrage.
