The appearance of this print, which resembles paint on newspaper, reflects de Kooning’s working method. The artist would add paint to his canvases over long periods of time, scraping through layers to expose what was below before adding new paint. He might let a canvas stand in the studio for days, laying newspaper over the paint to slow drying. When it was removed, newsprint would transfer to the paint and vice versa, an effect the artist embraced as an element of controlled chance. The composition reproduced in this screenprint recalls collage, a method de Kooning also used.
