A view of the steeple of the Congregational Church in Old Lyme. it is seen behind a bank of green trees. There is a brown field in the foreground. Gregory Smith's friend and fellow painter, Will Howe Foote, persuaded Smith to move from his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Old Lyme in 1910. He became an active member of the Lyme Art Association where he was awarded several exhibition prizes.
