Portrait of Evelyn Sloane (later Evelyn Sloane Griswold). She is seated, wearing a flowing white gown.
Painted in 1898 by the French academic painter Carolus-Duran, the painting was donated by Evelyn Griswold daughter, Mrs. Woodbridge Bingham.

Evelyn Sloane Griswold was a cousin, by marriage, of Miss Florence Griswold. She and her husband lived on Griswold Point in Old Lyme and befriended many of the Old Lyme artists.

This portrait of her was painted when she was 22 years old. From her parents she inherited a love for art, music, and literature, and was an accomplished pianist. She travelled to France with her father on numerous trips. She married Edward Schenck Sloane Griswold in 1907. They had six children.

This portrait was commissioned through the Knoedler Galleries in New York by Evelyn's parents in 1898.
