Perhaps more than any other American painter Davis successfully explored the Turneresque tradition of "cloud pictures." Using a bright palette and vigorous brushwork, Davis gives the viewer a strong sense of passing clouds on a New England summer afternoon. The effect altogether belies the size of this little painting.
