One of a portfolio of 10 silkscreens by Mondrian organized by Holtzman produced by Ives-Sillman in 1967. Holtzman included Mondrian's 1927 essay "Jazz and Neoplasticism" and authored an introduction. Paintings selected for the portfolio included examples from museums and private collections to which Holtzman had sold work from Mondrian's estate, and pieces still in Holtzman's possession. Foxtrot I's title appealed to Holtzman for its allusion to music, an interest he shared with Mondrian. The "lozenge" composition draws attention to the picture as an object by striking a balance between the diagonal edges and the horizontal and vertical grid. Holtzman explored the tension between two and three dimensions in his own work in the 1940s.
