Painting
The Danish-born Emil Carlsen trained as an architect before emigrating to the United States in 1872. Over the next two decades, he studied and taught art in Chicago, Paris, San Francisco, and New York, and built a reputation as a still-life painter. In 1896, Carlsen began summering in Connecticut, where he took up the subject of landscape. At first, he stayed at artist J. Alden Weir’s home in Windham Center, even residing with his family in a cottage on Weir’s property. This painting, completed in 1904, probably depicts that spot. The following year, Carlsen bought his own home in the northwest Connecticut town of Falls Village.
The limited tonal range and carefully constructed surface of "Night, Old Windham" recall the work of John H. Twachtman, the influential Impressionist and teacher whose paintings Carlsen admired. Carlsen’s intimate response to nature creates a hushed, dreamlike mood that is the hallmark of his landscapes.
This painting won the Webb Prize for the best landscape by an American artist when it was exhibited at the Society of American Artists in 1905.

Metcalf's biographer, Elizabeth de Veer, refers to "Thawing Brook" as "an unusally fine Metcalf" and certainly it is that. A bank of dark firs recede diagonally across the picture plane casting shadows of various lengths across a sloping field. In the distance are hills and a lovely soft blue sky. The play of light and shadows across the snow and the melting brook is nothing short of masterful.
Willard Metcalf painted "Thawing Brook" in Cornish, New Hampshire, site of an art colony he frequented after 1909. Although colony life in Cornish was at its height during the summer, Metcalf often preferred to visit during the quieter winter months. The snow-covered landscapes he produced emphasize the season’s poetic beauty over its harshness. Raised by ardent spiritualists and as an admirer of such transcendentalist authors as Emerson and Thoreau, Metcalf devoted particular attention to the snow-bound stream in the painting’s foreground—a symbol of nature’s enduring life force despite the icy rigors of winter.

Like many of the Old Lyme Impressionists, Rook loved to paint views of the mountain laurel that flourished along the banks of the Lieutenant River in June. A methodical painter, Rook was frequently frustrated that the flowers faded faster than they could be painted. To the delight of some of the other artists, Rook sometimes tied pink cotton balls onto the laurel bushes for a "second blooming", thereby allowing him to finish his composition.
Mr. Rook priced "Laurel" at $5000; it did not sell. He felt it was one of his finest works and, disheartened, he draped the painting with a black shawl and kept it in his studio throughout his life.

Rook was regarded by his peers in the Lyme Art Colony as one of the finest painters of their group. This panoramic painting depicts the bare cliff face known as East Rock, which along with its companion West Rock had been a landmark for American landscape painters since the early nineteenth century. Weir omits the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument which had stood atop East Rock since 1887. Although he had been on the planning committee, he resigned out of opposition to the final design and placement of the obelisk. In this painting, Weir emphasizes East Rock’s bucolic setting, complete with a ramshackle fence, with few hints of neighboring New Haven’s steady growth.
A son of the prominent artist Robert W. Weir and a brother of the Impressionist J. Alden Weir, John Ferguson Weir arrived in New Haven in 1869 as the director of the Yale School of Fine Arts, a position he held for decades. The artist remained loyal to academic tradition, but here adopts elements of Tonalism and Impressionism in his choice of muted colors and textured brushwork.
