Portrait of the artist's daughter, Rosalind, painted at Pleasure Beach in Waterford, Connecticut on a bright summer day. The girl is wearing a white dress. She is holding the edges of a floppy straw hat with both hands as if to prevent the wind from blowing it away. She has shoulder-length, curly brown hair. The background is 3/4 blue sky with ocean and beach grass.
This charming portrait dates to 1915, the subject bodly depicted against and impressionistic landscape as backdrop. One of Metcalf's earliest paintings, "Little Eddie" 1874-75, depicts a small girl grasping her hat in the same manner.

Sketches of the White Mountains. In 1993 the Museum acquired an extraordinary collection of seven sketchbooks and a diary belonging to Willard Metcalf. The sketchbooks date from 1875 to 1914. The diary dates to 1876. Three of the sketchbooks are from the early 1880s when Metcalf accompanied famed Smithsonian ethnologist Frank Hamilton Cushing to New Mexico to prepare illustrations for an article on the Zuni for "Harper's" magazine. Zuni customs, the faces of its people, and the landscape are recorded with penetrating on-the-spot detail. One sketchbook even shows his efforts to learn the difficult Zuni language. Each of these sketchbooks reveal much about the fieldwork of the artist, just as the diary suggests his personal thoughts. Together, they offer many clues to how Willard Metcalf observed the world around him.

A loosely painted Italian landscape sketch showing tall, dark evergreens in the left foreground, a single evergreen in the center right, and a hill covered with pink buildings in the background. In the foreground a road descends, disappearing in a tunnel. Red-roofed buildings cluster on steep hills at left. In the valley below buildings nestle. There are hills in a blue haze in the distance. This quick study sketch may have been one of severalmade for the finished painting "Old Mill, Pelago, Tuscany."

In America, metalpoint drawings were first produced in the mid-1890s. The medium is very challenging and only a few artists have attempted to create in it. The most popular form, silverpoint, is produced by inserting a shapened silver wire into a holder or similar tool. The artist then draws with it on a coated paper. When the point passes over the paper, a small amount of the metal is deposited and the image cannot be erased. Metcalf chose the subject of his daughter, Rosalind for this work.

A portrait of the artist's wife as a young woman. Drawn at Pimlico Apartments, Central Park West (NYC) after the birth of her daughter Rosalind, their first child. The head is 2/3 view, the demeanor is serious but spirited, the gaze of her eyes directed to the right. "Mr. Metcalf has caught the youthful charm of the lady, despite the subtlety of features, with astonishing character..." The Evening Globe, March 16, 1912.

Like other American artists, Metcalf studied in Europe, attending Academie Julian and taking sketching tours to Brittany and Giverny as well as to North Africa. After his return to the United States, he became one of the founders of "The Ten," a loose-knit group of American painters which included his close friend Childe Hassam. Hassam provided a likely reason for Metcalf
to visit Old Lyme. Metcalf's self portrait shows a 3/4 view of his head and chest. The background is dark with strong shadows obscuring half of his face.

Metcalf's biographer, Elizabeth de Veer, refers to "Thawing Brook" as "an unusally fine Metcalf" and certainly it is that. A bank of dark firs recede diagonally across the picture plane casting shadows of various lengths across a sloping field. In the distance are hills and a lovely soft blue sky. The play of light and shadows across the snow and the melting brook is nothing short of masterful.
Willard Metcalf painted "Thawing Brook" in Cornish, New Hampshire, site of an art colony he frequented after 1909. Although colony life in Cornish was at its height during the summer, Metcalf often preferred to visit during the quieter winter months. The snow-covered landscapes he produced emphasize the season’s poetic beauty over its harshness. Raised by ardent spiritualists and as an admirer of such transcendentalist authors as Emerson and Thoreau, Metcalf devoted particular attention to the snow-bound stream in the painting’s foreground—a symbol of nature’s enduring life force despite the icy rigors of winter.

Kalmia depicts the mountain laurel bushes that bloom each June along the banks of the Lieutenant River behind the Griswold House. The style of the painting fuses the flickery brushstrokes of the Impressionist movement --as seen in the bushes in the foreground-with the flat muted style of tonalist painting in the background.
