A large dining table once owned by the Griswold family. There are three leaves in the original mahogany, four additional leaves were made at a later date, out of pine. There are casters on the legs which were added at a later date.
Originally owned by the Griswold family, the table was sold at the 1938 auction after Florence Griswold's death. The table and several other items were purchased by an antiques dealer from Michigan, who often traveled to New England in search of antiques. The dealer never sold the table, but rather kept it for his own personal use. After his death the table was inherited by his son. In 1996 the son contacted Heartwood Antiques in Grand Rapids with the intent to sell the table and several other items. Heartwood Antiques noticed that penciled beneath the table were the words, "Miss Griswold's, Connecticut." Through a variety of resources, the dealer was able to contact the Florence Griswold Museum whereby our curator and director checked the authenticity of the table and confirmed that it was indeed the dining table from the Griswold house. With the help of several donations from museum members, the table was purchased, shipped from Michigan to the Museum, and is currently on display where it belongs, in the dining room of the Griswold house.

The chair retains traces of brown paint on the rear styles.
Transitional chairs of chair type were made of maple throughout New England. The design retains features of the earlier Baroque William and Mary style in its block turning, brush foot, and stretcher turning, while also using late Baroque elements such as the vasiform back splat and arched rear stile. There is a related set with more extensive stretchers that retains a history of ownership in the Old Lyme parsonage, possibly made in Old Lyme, likely in New London County. For comparison, see New London County Furniture (Lyman Allyn Museum, 1974) cat. 14.

This type of chair, in period sources called a York chair or fiddle-back chair, was likely made in New York City or the Hudson River Valley between 1740 and 1800. The inexpensive York chairs were quickly turned with minimal carved ornament, and exported to neighboring colonies where they earned the name. Examples were traded to Connecticut and Rhode Island in the 18th century, where they influenced the form of locally produced examples. These chairs represent a simplified iteration of the late-Baroque Queen Anne style, and enjoyed a long period of popularity at a modest cost: similar chairs sold for roughly $1 in the wake of the American Revolution. The large front legs with relatively delicate pad feet of this example emulate the form of a more labor-intensive carved cabriole leg, and are a feature associated with the Hudson River Valley.
This side chair with a trapezoidal, woven rush seat cants back at a slight angle. The rear stiles feature vasiform turning below the yoke-crest, a vasiform backsplat giving it the period name “fiddle-back chair,” and tapered cylindrical front legs beginning with ball turnings below the seat rail and terminating in pad feet. The front stretcher with exaggerated ball and disc turning shows extensive wear consistent with age. There are two unadorned turned stretchers on each side turned of a ring-porous wood (possibly ash), and a single stretcher on the rear.
This chair retains two coats of paint, an early red-brown, possibly ochre, and a later coat of glossy black paint. The woven rush seat is modern. There have been two repairs to the crest rail. In the first, over the left stile, a small split was secured with a nail. In the second, a large loss was patched with black painted pine, secured with a screw in the center, and a wooden peg below the right ear.

It has bird-cage with 4 vase-shaped supports, an urn-shaped pedestal, and 3 cabriole legs which end in claw and ball feet, which are flattened.
