This scrapbook contains 100 pages of various oil and pencil sketches, letters, business cards and photographs collected and assembled by the artist Oliver I Lay II. Lay enjoyed a successful career as a New York portrait painter captuing the likeness of such famed individuals as the artist Winslow Homer, as well as the likes of Old Lyme residents such as Captain Daniel Chadwick and Colonel John Peck. Laysville, a section of Old Lyme near Roger's Lake, derives its name from his family. Lay's diary, now in the collection of the New York Historical Society, documents his career in New York and his frequent trips to Lyme where he describes sketching the rocks and trees around mill ponds, local scenery and friends and family.

Voorhees completed only a few figure subjects or portraits, mostly of family members, preferring instead to paint landscapes in keeping with his love of the outdoors. This likeness, which depicts a man in the sort of hat, flowing tie, and overcoat worn by artists while painting en plein air, entered the museum’s collection as a self-portrait by Voorhees. But comparison of the painting with photographs of the artist confirms that he is not the sitter. The man’s characteristic attire and fanciful waxed moustache suggests that he may have been an artist—perhaps a friend Voorhees made while studying in Europe between 1897 and 1900.

Work on Paper
Although Hosford initially trained as a painter, he abandoned painting for printmaking by the 1920s. He spent many winters working in St. Paul, Minnesota where he created this view on the St. Croix river. Hosford was the public relations counsel for the Oliver Mining Company, and visited their mining operations up and down the St. Croix River.
