Not long after settling in Old Lyme, artist Lucien Abrams painted this picture of the orchard behind Florence Griswold’s boardinghouse. The Griswold family had long pursued small-scale farming, and the 1880 census records that on their 15-acre estate, one acre was devoted to an orchard consisting of 15 trees. Abrams depicts the mature trees, which attracted artists to the colony during apple blossom time, when painters such as Childe Hassam set up easels outdoors to capture the radiant, ruffled petals. A female figure seated in the foreground suggests that by 1916, the orchard was as much a site for outdoor leisure as an agricultural resource.
The American-born Abrams spent many years abroad before returning to this country in 1914. In France, he absorbed the expressive brushwork and non-naturalistic color palette of the post-Impressionists, which he translated into the gestural application of red and purple for the contours of the tree trunks in The Orchard.

Bare trees and snow-encrusted conifers surround a Victorian house, behind which a person tends a horse. A barn stands partially obscurred behind the house. A snow-covered hill rises to a cloudless sky painted in hues of pink and blue. This house is on Ferry Road in Old Lyme and was originally owned by the artist. It later became known as "the band house," because the Town Band held their practices there. It is presently the home of the Nut Museum.

Grassy Hill depicts the area in Lyme where DuMond bought a house in 1906. Artist Allen B. Talcott had first introduced him to the crowd at Florence Griswold's house, but it was the close friendship DuMond formed there with Willard Metcalf that had the most profound impact on his work. the Autumnal radiance and tightly controlled strokes in Grassh Hill echo Metcalf's artistic experiments in the earlier pastel Lyme Hillside.
Assisted by Will Howe Foote, DuMond came to townin 1902 as the Director of the Lyme Summer School of Art sponsored by the Art Students League of New York. Completed over three decades after his arriva, Grassy Hill affirms the Impressionist artistic legacty of the colony, which DuMond helped perpetuate through his teaching at the "School of Lyme".

Henry Ward Ranger, founder of the Lyme Art Colony, first came to Old Lyme in the summer of 1899. "Autumn Woodlands" reveals Ranger's fascination with stands of ancient trees and his interest in a limited color palette and rough textural effects. Ranger's interest in a tonal style dramatically affected the work created by other early members of the Colony.

When Henry Ward Ranger moved east from Old Lyme to Noank, Connecticut in 1904, the Impressionist painter Childe Hassam assumed Ranger's position as the stylistic leader of the colony. Although Ranger continued to experiment with painting techniques more associated with American Tonalism, his later canvases, such as "Groton Long Point", show an inclination towards Impressionism in their textured surfaces and vibrant colors.

A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Allen Butler Talcott studied briefly with Dwight Tryon, whose influence is suggested by the compositional spareness and color harmonies of "Sunset after Storm". Talcott's successful career was cut short by his untimely death at 41. While he is often associated with the American Barbizon painters, he also painted with the brighter palette of the Impressionists. He attained professional recognition in 1893 at the Paris Salon with European scenes; later his work showed his deep appreciation of nature and a love for his native Connecticut landscape.

View of a meadow crossed by low stone walls with a large hill in the background and a cluster of tall thin trees in the left foreground. A native of Ontario, Canada, George Thomson studied with Frank Vincent DuMond, William Lathrop and Henry Rankin Poore, all artists who were associated with Old Lyme. Thomson painted "Hills of Old Lyme" in 1921 at a time when he was actively exhibiting with the New Haven Paint and Clay Club and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. Thomson's work is occasionally confused with the work of well-known Mystic painter George Albert Thompson.

View of three houses and a barn beside a dirt road with barren trees and patches of snow. Early in his career, undoubtedly influenced by Henry Ward Ranger, Voorhees painted in the Barbizon manner. Equipped with stoves, such studios were designed to keep the artists warm on winter sketching trips.
