When Henry Ward Ranger moved east from Old Lyme to Noank, Connecticut in 1904, the Impressionist painter Childe Hassam assumed Ranger's position as the stylistic leader of the colony. Although Ranger continued to experiment with painting techniques more associated with American Tonalism, his later canvases, such as "Groton Long Point", show an inclination towards Impressionism in their textured surfaces and vibrant colors.
