Not long after settling in Old Lyme, artist Lucien Abrams painted this picture of the orchard behind Florence Griswold’s boardinghouse. The Griswold family had long pursued small-scale farming, and the 1880 census records that on their 15-acre estate, one acre was devoted to an orchard consisting of 15 trees. Abrams depicts the mature trees, which attracted artists to the colony during apple blossom time, when painters such as Childe Hassam set up easels outdoors to capture the radiant, ruffled petals. A female figure seated in the foreground suggests that by 1916, the orchard was as much a site for outdoor leisure as an agricultural resource.
The American-born Abrams spent many years abroad before returning to this country in 1914. In France, he absorbed the expressive brushwork and non-naturalistic color palette of the post-Impressionists, which he translated into the gestural application of red and purple for the contours of the tree trunks in The Orchard.

A view of the parlor of the Griswold House . Paintings like this one give us clues as to how the house was once furnished. Among the furnishings are an Empire style table, a Chippendale chair, and a roccoco sofa. The table lamp is owned by the Museum and is on display in the Miss Florence's bedroom. There is a fire in the fireplace. The painting is dedicated to Miss Florence.

Robert Aitken's request that Metcalf sit for a portrait bust was a good measure of the painter's growing professional esteem. Upon completion, the bust was shown at an exhibition of "The Ten", where it was admired.
A photograph of the clay model for the bust appeared in the article, Elizabeth Anna Semple, "Art of Robert Aitken, Sculptor," Overland Monthly LXI, no. 13 (March 1913): 219.

Two reels of a silent film showing the artists George Bruestle, Ivan Olinsky, Edward Volkert, Eugene Higgins & his wife, and Percival Rosseau painting in their studios, en plein air, and around their houses in Lyme. The film also shows Florence Griswold at her house, in her garden and at the Lyme Art Association.
This film represents a rare glimpse of the personal environments in which Florence Griswold and the Lyme artists interacted with one another, their families, and friends. Not only does the film convey an alluring sense of country life here, but it documents the appearance of the Lyme Landscape during the 1930s. Filmed during the waning years of the Lyme Art Colony and only a couple of years before Miss Florence died, this film is a valuable document of a changing landscape and ,poignantly, the only known film footage of Florence Griswold.

This view of the front hall of the Griswold House looking out the door has a puzzling aspect. The garlands imply Christmas decorations, yet the landscape, as seen through the door, is quite green and spring-like. It has been surmised that the laurel garlands were hung in remembrance of Allen Talcott, a founding member of the colony who died in 1908.

Matilda Browne was the only woman asked to paint a door panel in the interior of the Griswold House, and was one of the few women considered a serious artist by her male colleagues. This painting is one of her most significant works, and a welcome addition to the collection. The painting is as much about animals as it is an expression of the artist's interest in the atmospheric effects of moonlight. The location depicted in the painting , known as Cornfield Point, is on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook, across the Connecticut River from Old Lyme.

A view of Ferry Point painted from the Chadwick estate in Old Lyme. The work shows a dirt lane with a wooden post and rail fence, a hillock jutting into the Connecticut River, several houses lining the bank of the River, and several small row boats and sailing craft moored in a cove. The opposite shore merges with the light blue shy, ending at the Saybrook Point lighthouse. Ferry Road was the first highway in Lyme, built in 1666, to connect the village and ferry. This view was painted no later than 1870 at which time a permanent bridge was constructed to replace the ferry.

Future Lyme resident Walker Evans traveled to Havana in 1933 to make pictures for The Crime of Cuba, a book by Carleton Beals criticizing the country’s dictator Gerardo Machado y Morales and the United States’s support for his regime. Evans shot hundreds of negatives during his stay, photographing everyone from beggars and policemen to the grimy collier pictured here. Evans’s sensitive portrait of the ragged dockworker not only acknowledges the extreme poverty in which islanders lived but also looks forward to the iconic portraits the photographer made of inhabitants of rural Alabama for James Agee’s book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Although not published in The Crime of Cuba, the dockworker’s portrait did appear in American Photographs, a 1938 book that accompanied an exhibition by Evans at the Museum of Modern Art. Later, it was also reproduced in a portfolio of fourteen photographs by Evans printed by Ives-Sillman of New Haven. This print is from that portfolio.

Shortly before their marriage, Foote painted this portrait of his future wife, Helen Kirtland Freeman. The couple met in Old Lyme, where Foote taught summer art classes and Miss Freeman studied with the artist Henry Rankin Poore. Foote portrays his bride-to-be as both a fashionable woman and as someone appreciative of the arts. She clasps a book in her gloved hand, and her profile posture and feathered hat echo the graceful form of Nike of Samothrace, a copy of which appears behind her.
Foote’s skills as a portraitist were honed in France, where he studied at the Académie Julian between 1897 and 1900. The ambitious scale of this portrait, the attention to the figure, and the presence of a sculpture cast all harken back to the French system of art instruction, which emphasized mastery of the human form through drawing from engravings, plaster casts, and, ultimately, live models. This portrait’s restricted palette and the fact that Foote exhibited this painting under the title "Young Woman in Black and White" suggest his lingering exploration of the tonal values favored by James MacNeill Whistler, with whom he studied briefly in France.

Portrait of the artist's daughter, Rosalind, painted at Pleasure Beach in Waterford, Connecticut on a bright summer day. The girl is wearing a white dress. She is holding the edges of a floppy straw hat with both hands as if to prevent the wind from blowing it away. She has shoulder-length, curly brown hair. The background is 3/4 blue sky with ocean and beach grass.
This charming portrait dates to 1915, the subject bodly depicted against and impressionistic landscape as backdrop. One of Metcalf's earliest paintings, "Little Eddie" 1874-75, depicts a small girl grasping her hat in the same manner.

Like other American artists, Metcalf studied in Europe, attending Academie Julian and taking sketching tours to Brittany and Giverny as well as to North Africa. After his return to the United States, he became one of the founders of "The Ten," a loose-knit group of American painters which included his close friend Childe Hassam. Hassam provided a likely reason for Metcalf
to visit Old Lyme. Metcalf's self portrait shows a 3/4 view of his head and chest. The background is dark with strong shadows obscuring half of his face.

When Henry Ward Ranger moved east from Old Lyme to Noank, Connecticut in 1904, the Impressionist painter Childe Hassam assumed Ranger's position as the stylistic leader of the colony. Although Ranger continued to experiment with painting techniques more associated with American Tonalism, his later canvases, such as "Groton Long Point", show an inclination towards Impressionism in their textured surfaces and vibrant colors.

"Sunset Over the Marsh" is one of Talcott's major works from the 1890s. The exact location is unknown, although it is probably a scene in France where Talcott lived for much of the 1890s. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Talcott studied briefly with Dwight Tryon, whose influence is suggested by the compositional spareness and color harmonies of "Sunset Over the Marsh".
