The ship then passed on to another captain and in 1856 it was lost at sea in transit from London to New York with all passengers, cargo, and crew. The Ocean Queen was built at New York by Jacob A. Westervelt & William Mackey, and was launched in 1850. She sailed in Griswold's Black X Line of sailing packets between New York and London, her westbound passages averaging 33 days, her shortest passage being 23 days, her longest 52 days. In February 1856, with W. B. Smith as master, she sailed from London for New York with 90 passengers and a crew of 33, and went missing. This likeness, which depicts a man in the sort of hat, flowing tie, and overcoat worn by artists while painting en plein air, entered the museum’s collection as a self-portrait by Voorhees. But comparison of the painting with photographs of the artist confirms that he is not the sitter. The man’s characteristic attire and fanciful waxed moustache suggests that he may have been an artist—perhaps a friend Voorhees made while studying in Europe between 1897 and 1900. Evans shot hundreds of negatives during his stay, photographing everyone from beggars and policemen to the grimy collier pictured here. Evans’s sensitive portrait of the ragged dockworker not only acknowledges the extreme poverty in which islanders lived but also looks forward to the iconic portraits the photographer made of inhabitants of rural Alabama for James Agee’s book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Although not published in The Crime of Cuba, the dockworker’s portrait did appear in American Photographs, a 1938 book that accompanied an exhibition by Evans at the Museum of Modern Art. Later, it was also reproduced in a portfolio of fourteen photographs by Evans printed by Ives-Sillman of New Haven. This print is from that portfolio.
