The couple met in Old Lyme, where Foote taught summer art classes and Miss Freeman studied with the artist Henry Rankin Poore. Foote portrays his bride-to-be as both a fashionable woman and as someone appreciative of the arts. She clasps a book in her gloved hand, and her profile posture and feathered hat echo the graceful form of Nike of Samothrace, a copy of which appears behind her. Foote’s skills as a portraitist were honed in France, where he studied at the Académie Julian between 1897 and 1900. The ambitious scale of this portrait, the attention to the figure, and the presence of a sculpture cast all harken back to the French system of art instruction, which emphasized mastery of the human form through drawing from engravings, plaster casts, and, ultimately, live models. This portrait’s restricted palette and the fact that Foote exhibited this painting under the title "Young Woman in Black and White" suggest his lingering exploration of the tonal values favored by James MacNeill Whistler, with whom he studied briefly in France.", "Dedication" : "Florence Griswold Museum; Gift of Katherine Foote Thompson", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "", "Department" : "", "Obj_Name" : "Figurative", "Period" : "", "Style" : "Lyme Art Colony", "Edition" : "", "Related_Parent" : [ { "Rel_Obj_ID" : "500", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Bridge and Town, c. 1918" } ], "Related_Sibling" : [ { "Rel_Obj_ID" : "26", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Chinese Twilight" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "355", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "December Morn, 1921" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "498", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Florence Griswold House by Moonlight" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "249", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Birches" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "345", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "County Road in Summer" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "252", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "The Bathers" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "315", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Mountain Laurel and Birches" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "352", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "View of Granada, 1910" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "250", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Landscape with Cow" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "10", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "White Cottage in Autumn" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "234", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "The Fox Chase" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "380", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Autumn Landscape" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "31", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Summer Scene" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "224", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Normandy Bull (Monarch of the Farm)" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "235", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "The Garden Walk" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "236", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Landscape with a Strolling Man" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "225", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Bucolic Landscape" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "499", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Studio Interior" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "189", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "A Summer's Night, c. 1906" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "500", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Bridge and Town, c. 1918" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "191", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Portrait of a Young Boy" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "192", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Blacksmith Shop, Old Lyme" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "501", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Caricature with Mule, 1905" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "248", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Border Plaza, Taxco" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "193", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Summer, c. 1913" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "194", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Fish Houses, Monhegan Island, Maine" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "502", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Female Nude" } ], "Related_Children" : [ { "Rel_Obj_ID" : "498", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Florence Griswold House by Moonlight" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "499", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Studio Interior" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "189", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "A Summer's Night, c. 1906" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "190", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Portrait of Miss Helen Freeman, c. 1907" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "500", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Bridge and Town, c. 1918" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "191", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Portrait of a Young Boy" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "192", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Blacksmith Shop, Old Lyme" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "501", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Caricature with Mule, 1905" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "248", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Border Plaza, Taxco" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "193", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Summer, c. 1913" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "194", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Fish Houses, Monhegan Island, Maine" },{ "Rel_Obj_ID" : "502", "Rel_Obj_Title" : "Female Nude" } ], "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/1971_32.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/1971_32.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/1971_32.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/1971_32.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "20356", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 202, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/202", "Disp_Access_No" : "1971.11", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1907", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1907", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1907", "Disp_Title" : "Portrait of Mrs. Brown and Her Son", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Walter Griffin", "Sort_Artist" : "Griffin, Walter", "Disp_Dimen" : "72 in. x 37 3/4 in. Lydia Longacre’s emphasis on a single color and inclusion of Asian prints in the background of this delicate portrait attests to the lifelong influence of her teacher, James McNeill Whistler.
