Bodkins were used for making holes in cloth so that a ribbon could be tied through. This one was made of whalebone by Captain Theodore Harris of Sag Harbor. According to the 1850 census, Harris was listed as a seaman whose residence was Southold, Suffolk County, New York. He died at sea in the South Pacific.
