Puzzle - Old Lyme Church

ca. 1909
20th Century

L.G. Perkins,

Object Type: Toy
Medium and Support: lithograph on wood
Credit Line: Florence Griswold Museum
Accession Number: 2001.45.1-161
A boxed puzzle originally containing 161 pieces depicting the Old Lyme Congregational Church circa 1906. The image was used on the front cover of Ladies Home Journal magazine. The maker, L.G. Perkins, was a relative of Florence Griswold's.

Between 1907 and 1910, there was a "craze" for adult jigsaw puzzles. A woman in Eastern Massachusetts made a wooden puzzle as a fundraiser for a children's hospital, and the puzzles caught on with adults, inspiring both companies and individual women to produce puzzles to be sold by the thousands in stores or traded in "puzzle exchanges." The games were particularly popular at parties, clubs, and resorts, and were often called "social puzzles."

Four pieces of the puzzle are missing. The pieces of the puzzle do not interlock, nor is there a photo on the box for the assembler's reference.
