Sillman experimented with scratchboards beginning in the 1960s. Scratchboards,
which typically consist of an illustration board coated in a black clay?like substance,
are cut into with a tool. Sillman’s delicate lines on this rare metallic example gently
distort the picture plane with a rhythmic pattern. The artist used silver only rarely,
but those few works are among his finest.
