Robert Aitken's request that Metcalf sit for a portrait bust was a good measure of the painter's growing professional esteem. Upon completion, the bust was shown at an exhibition of "The Ten", where it was admired.
A photograph of the clay model for the bust appeared in the article, Elizabeth Anna Semple, "Art of Robert Aitken, Sculptor," Overland Monthly LXI, no. 13 (March 1913): 219.
