Wilson Irvine first visited Old Lyme as early as 1914 and by 1918 had purchased a home in the area. Originally from the midwest, Irvine spent much time discovering and painting the landscape of New England. Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine, served as the subject for this work, and was a place that attracted a number of the Old Lyme painters for its rugged beauty and dramatic light.
